چکیده

Fe–Mg exchange is the most important solid solution involved in for Fe–Mg exchange between the coexisting crystalline phases and melt, KdFe–Mg, show a relatively simple and predictable behaviour partial melting of spinel lherzolite, and the system CaO– MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–FeO (CMASF) is ideally suited to explore with pressure and temperature: the coefficients for olivine and spinel do not show significant dependence on temperature, whereas the this type of exchange during mantle melting. Also, if primary midocean ridge basalts are largely generated in the spinel lherzolite coefficients for orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene increase with pressure and temperature. When melting of lherzolite is modeled in the stability field by near-fractional fusion, then Na and other highly incompatible elements will early on become depleted in the source, CMASF system, a strong linear correlation is observed between the mg-number of the lherzolite and the mg-number of the nearand the melting behaviour of mantle lherzolite should resemble the melting behaviour of simplified lherzolite in the CMASF system. solidus melts. Comparison with melting in the CMASN system indicates that Na2O has a strong effect on lherzolite melting behaviour We have determined the isobarically univariant melting relations of the lherzolite phase assemblage in the CMASF system in the only at small degrees of melting. 0·7–2·8 GPa pressure range. Isobarically, for every 1 wt % increase in the FeO content of the melt in equilibrium with the lherzolite phase assemblage, the equilibrium temperature is lower

We present the results of melting experiments on a moderately depleted peridotite composition (DMM1) at 10 kbar and 1250±1390 C. Specially designed experiments demonstrate that liquids extracted into aggregates of vitreous carbon spheres maintained chemical contact with the bulk charge down to melt fractions of 0 02±0 04 and approached equilibrium closely. With increasing melt fraction, SiO2, F...

Generation of mid-ocean ridge basalts at pressures from 1 to 7 GPa

We propose a model for the generation of average MORBs based on phase relations in the CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-CO2 system at pressures from 3 to 7 GPa and in the CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-Na2OFeO (CMASNF) system at pressures from 0.9 to 1.5 GPa. The MELT seismic tomography (Forsyth et al., 2000) across the East Pacific Rise shows the largest amount of melt centered at 30-km depth and lesser amounts at grea...

Continuous Gradations among Primary Carbonatitic, Kimberlitic, Melilititic, Basaltic, Picritic, and Komatiitic Melts in Equilibrium with Garnet Lherzolite at 3–8GPa

Multianvil melting experiments in the system CaO–MgO–Al2O3– SiO2–CO2 (CMAS–CO2) at 3–8 GPa, 1340–1800 C, involving the garnet lherzolite phase assemblage in equilibrium with CO2-bearing melts, yield continuous gradations in melt composition between carbonatite, kimberlite, melilitite, komatiite, picrite, and basalt melts. The phase relations encompass a divariant surface in P–T space. Compariso...

An Experimental Determination of the Effect of Bulk Composition on Phase Relationships in Metasediments at Near-solidus Conditions

Phase relationships in metapelites were experimentally investigated in the model system CaO^K2O^FeO^MgO^Al2O3^SiO2^H2O on four synthetic compositions differing in their K2O content and K2O/Al2O3 ratio. Experiments were carried out at pressures ranging from 0 8 to 1 4 GPa and temperatures from 620 to 7408C under different fluid-buffered conditions. The stability of the assemblage garnet^biotite^...

We examine several issues related to peridotite partial melting by composition (Na2O decreases, CaO/Al2O3 increases) are similar to the effects of increasing total extent of melting of a fixed source performing thermodynamic calculations using the MELTS algorithm. composition, and the two phenomena may therefore be difficult to MELTS calculations suggest that the high alkali content of neardisc...
